Overview of Environmental Paper & Recycled Products

When developing En Masse Media in 2003, we looked at many different paper stocks to determine an optimal product offering for professionals in need of print materials. While examining competitive offerings, it quickly became evident that nearly all print suppliers in the market use a 12pt card stock offering at most a 15% post consumer waste content. Clearly professionals had little choice regarding what type of paper to utilize.

Recognizing the lack of selection and higher quality paper in the market, as well as the opportunity to leverage a gang-run model in conjunction with environmentally friendly practices, we set out to find a paper stock to give our customers a choice. We prioritized weight and recycled content, yet were unwilling to sacrifice printability. After thoroughly investigating all the paper stocks available, we found an optimal solution for gang-run cards, sheets and presentation folders: 115lb Save-A-Tree Coated Cover, a 13.5 pt 100% post consumer waste coated cover. Using this same philosophy, we also identified various paper solutions for print materials such as letterhead, envelopes and brochures.  

The notion to offer our clients a recycled paper alternative for their print production needs became an imperative upon estimating how much paper we were going to require per year to fulfill customer orders. An eco-audit further emphasized this notion by articulating the impact of pursuing environmentally friendly printing practices – saving energy, water, and trees, while also reducing land fill waste.
